Fun Facts About Masbate

Located at the heart of the Philippines, Masbate is a charming province surrounded by the azure waters of the Visayan Sea. It shares borders with provinces like Sorsogon, Albay, and Quezon, making it a key part of the Bicol Region. Comprising the three main islands of Masbate, Ticao, and Burias, along with smaller islets that add to its coastal beauty, the province boasts a diverse geography, from sandy beaches to rolling hills and lush mountains. The celebration of the Rodeo Masbateño festival, where locals showcase their cowboy skills and traditions, adds a vibrant cultural touch to this picturesque province. It’s not just about the natural beauty; Masbate offers a unique blend of festivities that make it stand out as the “Rodeo Capital of the Philippines.”

The origin of the name “Masbate” is shrouded in various theories. One suggestion links it to the combination of “masa” and “bate” or another term, “masibat,” but this remains unverified. Another perspective connects it to the island’s old name, Masbat or Masbad, meaning “a lot of gold.” In the 1790s, locals warmly welcomed the Spanish, presenting them with gold and utensils.

The Spanish explorers found significant gold mines in the mountains, which are now part of the town of Aroroy. Initially administered by Augustinian missionaries and later by Recollect missionaries, the island underwent proselytization under the Bishopric of Nueva Caceres, becoming the Corregimiento de Masbate after the conquest of Southern Luzon and the Bicol Region in 1688.
