From what I’ve seen, the younger crowd tends to like it on the sweet side, while the older folks prefer a bit of saltiness to it. It’s a snack that’s both comforting and gives a little taste of Masbate’s food culture.

Got a sweet tooth? Then caramelado is definitely a must-try for you! This is Masbate’s version of pastillas made with carabao’s milk and sugar. It’s a sweet treat that won’t break the bank—and is usually priced at around P100 for a pack of 30 pieces.
Molido
Another sweet treat that you must not miss in Masbate is Molido. Meaning “ground” or “milled” in Spanish, Molido is a dessert crafted from sweet potatoes and sometimes includes the delightful addition of pili nuts. However, it’s the sweet potato version that takes center stage in the bustling markets of Masbate. There’s a special kind of Molido that locals and tourists alike rave about—it’s sprinkled with coconut bits and crushed pili nuts, adding an extra layer of flavor. Molido is a real delight, boasting a crumbly exterior, and a soft inside, and—believe it or not—it literally melts in your mouth. Priced at around P50 per pack of 30 pieces, this yummy kamote candy is easily found in the Ports of Masbate and the weekend flea markets.

As I only stayed in Masbate for a day, I directly went to the port area after my tour. Unfortunately, the only trip to Cebu for the day had already left, so I needed a place to stay overnight. Luckily, with the help of locals, I found an available space in an apartment usually for long-term stays. The kind driver got permission from the owner, allowing me to stay for the night. (That’s why it’s always better to book ahead. HAHA. Lesson learned.)

How to Get to Masbate
To get to Masbate from Manila, you can take a bus from Quezon City. Buses like RoRo Bus and Bicol Isarog leave from Cubao, Manila, and are loaded onto roll-on-roll-off boats between Pilar port in Sorsogon and Masbate City. The whole journey takes about 16 to 18 hours.
If you’re coming from Cebu, there’s a RoRo bus that goes directly to Masbate. This makes the trip more straightforward for passengers traveling from Cebu to Masbate.
