Coming from the archipelagic paradise of the Philippines, it is easy to claim that the country has one of the most number of islands in the world. But, did you know that the “Pearl of the Orient” only ranks seventh in terms of island quantity? What country do you think has the most number of islands in the world? Any guess?
After feasting our eyes on the beauty of Mt. Mayon, my colleagues and I decided to visit its nearby island province – Catanduanes. It was formerly known as the “Land of the Howling Winds” because of its close proximity to the Pacific, making it a typhoon prone area. But when the coast is clear, Catanduanes is truly a must-visit most especially for outdoor lovers. It has great spots for surfing, beaching, hiking, and Visita Iglesia.
Many Filipinos avoid visiting Batanes and Tawi-tawi due to perceived costs and dangers. However, a recent traveler group explored Tawi-tawi, uncovering hidden beauty and cultural richness often overshadowed by stereotypes. This journey challenges assumptions, encouraging exploration and deeper understanding of these provinces as potentially transformative experiences.
There will always be days like this – when we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere. But it’s not every day that in the middle of nowhere, we find ourselves. We understand ourselves. And we feel that very flesh beating erratically inside our chest, behind those shatterproof ribs.
