Everything You Need to Know about Running in Cebu-Cordova Expressway Link

Whoa, guess someone’s getting serious about running. Congratulations!

Well, if you’re planning to increase your mileage or add a little spice to your LSD (long slow distance) run, then the country’s longest bridge, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway, might just be the perfect destination.

Measuring approximately 8.5 kilometers one-way, a round trip across the CCLEX equates to a solid 17 kilometers. And that’s not even counting the distance to your chosen endpoint, whether it’s the lively Il Corso, the bustling SM Seaside, or straight back to the comfort of your home. Imagine turning your routine jog into a flavorful half-marathon by adding a few extra kilometers to your route! Spicy.

Want to Run Across CCLEX Bridge? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Ensuring accessibility for all, the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway has welcomed joggers and bikers by designating a 1.5-meter pedestrian lane on both sides of the bridge. Since May 2023, the gates have been wide open, providing a seamless route for hikers, runners, bikers, and those seeking a traffic-free alternative between Cordova and Cebu. No more navigating through the hustle and bustle of Lapu-Lapu City, Mandaue City, and Cebu City—the CCLEX offers a convenient and scenic pathway for all those who want to explore this breathtaking route.

Hello, SM Seaside Cebu!

Now, you don’t need to be a fast runner to gain access to CCLEX. Walking is allowed. And for those who find the idea of a round trip a bit daunting, there’s a convenient solution: opt for a van ride back. The key is to complete the entire one-way course, ensuring you soak in the full experience of CCLEX at your own pace.

As everyone’s safety is a top priority at CCLEX, hikers and runners are required to don proper gear. Unfortunately, those in sandals or slippers won’t be granted access—it’s a rule enforced by the diligent guards. Yes, I’ve seen several runners who were not permitted to enter the premises. (Please be understanding with the assigned guards. They are just following orders.)

Also, because CCLEX spans from Cebu City to Cordova, shade is a rare commodity. There are no designated areas for resting. And the sun can get all excited about grilling you up, so make sure to wear proper running attire and bring enough water with you. (There are water refilling stations in Cordova.)

While furry friends may make great companions, for their safety, bringing animals along is not permitted. However, children above three feet are more than welcome to accompany their parents.

A couple of important reminders: (1) The CCLEX pedestrian lane is a shared space for both runners and bikers, so please be considerate and share the path with those wishing to go ahead. (2) U-turns are a no-go; you’ll need to complete the entire course. In case of emergencies, emergency stands are strategically placed along the route for assistance. Regular patrols also monitor the bridge to ensure the well-being of those traversing it.

Personal Recommendations When Jogging on CCLEX:

After crossing CCLEX for the first time during the 2023 Cebu City Marathon, I have regularly made my LSD on the CCLEX bridge. There was even a time when I made it a habit to cross the bridge once a week—sometimes alone, other times tagging some friends along the way.

As it is conveniently located near my home, I can complete a half-marathon by eight in the morning and call it a day. It is also a good place to practice heat training and make personal records— especially if you’re gearing for a full or ultramarathon.

For me, it’s best to really start by 5 a.m. This early start not only treats you to a breathtaking sunrise view but also allows you to kick off before the heat strikes. Facing east means you’re literally staring into the sun, which means you’ll have to endure the scorching heat if you start late. Yes, beginning early ensures a more pleasant and comfortable run!

But, of course, for those who aren’t early risers, an afternoon run on CCLEX is always an option. In the later part of the day, I find the most captivating view to be from Cordova to Cebu City. Facing west, you get an unparalleled vantage point to witness a stunning sunset as you complete your run. However, it’s crucial to keep the cut-off time in mind. Ensure you enter the premises on or before 3:30 pm to guarantee you have ample time to finish your run before the 5 pm closing time.

Based on personal experience, completing CCLEX’s 8.5-kilometer stretch is feasible within a two-hour timeframe with brisk walking. I’ve seen my mom and her friends, who are advanced in age, achieve this during their early morning walks—just to give you an idea of how long it will take you.
