What will you do if you are given two weeks of paid vacation? Where will you go? Back when I started traveling, this has always been my favorite time of the year – a time to explore uncharted places, try new dishes, meet new friends, tick off activities from the bucket list, discover oneself, and so on. It is a time that I always look forward for. The experiences and stories were one for the books. And the encounters forged lasted even more because of the shared adventures.
I’ve never thought of Manila as a destination. It has always been a stopover; a gateway; a bridge that links to all the wonderful places around the beautiful island of Luzon. Its glints and glamour may seem inviting but one could only agree that it is also a home to: as Isa Garcia says it, hot sweltering mess of angry drivers, selfie takers, Facebook trolls, political dissent, and social acrobatics with a line towed in the sand to clearly separate the haves from the have-nots. So, imagine my obvious dislike when my travel group agreed to visit Manila for the annual tour. What in the world are they thinking?! Come on, out of the 7,641 islands of the Philippines, can’t you think of any better place?
This is not how I pictured the island of Panglao. It was supposed to be full of fun and adventure – the way my classmates enthusiastically described it back then. But definitely there was no fun in chasing those poor dolphins. There was no adventure in going to that Virgin Island when the island has sunk already. So I was left to wonder on what really makes Panglao Island worth the visit and why people kept coming back to this place despite the crowd and environmental issues it’s facing.

True to its name, Anda de Boracay resembles to Boracay’s white sand beach (though not as fine). As it was a weekend and the place was opened to public, there was a quite number of people on the beach that day. Nonetheless, it didn’t spoil the beauty that the beach already has and the fun we had. We stayed until after and saw how the place can transform into something magical. As the tides change, we saw a number of species hidden underwater. Though the sunset on the area isn’t as majestic as of the real Boracay, it was still such a sight to behold.
A Yellow Lake in Cebu? Sounds crazy right? This was also our initial reaction upon hearing those words from the locals whom we interacted during our short trip around Cebu. But well, blessed are the curious for they will have adventures. From Lake Kadamon, we took an uphill hike going to a seemingly barren area. The environment was rather peculiar. The place was so humid. The trees and plants growing looked really dry. And the soil was colored… yellow! No wonder, the locals described it as “magical”. We followed the trails going to an open area and saw the Yellow Lake that they were talking about.
Isola de Francesco is located around 10 minutes away from Panglao island. Owned and developed by businessman Ramon Rodriguez, Isola de Francesco is a perfect place for those who want to reflect and meditate in harmony with nature. The gentle hum of the waves and the chirping of the birds in the island provides a relaxing comfort to those who seek peace of mind and wisdom amidst the troubles of mundane life.
Reflecting on it, Sambawan Island opened a lot of opportunities for me. It made me connect with other bloggers, hikers, and people whom I would never have met had I declined Glister’s invitation. Indeed, you’ll never grow if you stayed on shores. As they say it: only rough seas make great sailors. Once in a while, you have to be bold and take risks. It’s either you win or you learn. It would take a lot of convincing because it’s really scary. But if you take risk, you also get rid of the uncertainty, of the ‘what-is’. Probably it won’t work exactly the way you hope it to be, at least you didn’t sit around playing safe while immense possibilities lie in the corner.
